Case Study
Joanna has been an in-company trainer for the past few years. This year three new apprentices-Anna, Sarah and Tony- came to the company, and she was responsible for guiding them during the apprenticeship program. Sarah and Tony were helping the company to achieve its goals, i.e. reach new markets and boost its cross-boarder’s activities, but Anna had trouble in being adapted to the company. Joanna noticed from the beginning that Anna couldn’t contribute to the company as the others did, but she decided to give her time to be adjusted. After all, she had already developed good communication pathways with the other two apprentices, and they seem to be comfortable around her. Joanna was a very experienced trainer, and she knew she did all the necessary actions in order to motivate the apprentices and feel confident to express their opinions. She used eye contact and facial expressions to encourage the speaker, while she also tried to recognize apprenticeship’s achievements and help them attain their goals. Furthermore, she used innovative tools to facilitate the learning process and to ensure the engagement of all trainees in it. For further supporting the apprentices, Joanna used to discuss with them their personal aspirations and accomplishments. In particular, Sarah and Tony were willing to share their thoughts about their career goals, as well as some personal accomplishments and information about their personal life. On the other hand, Anna wasn’t enjoying the conversations about personal information, and she seemed to feel uncomfortable in these types of discussions, especially when their peers were asking about her own accomplishments. Joanna realized that Anna is an introvert person, and that some discussions and actions hinder her from integrated into the company. As a consequence, she decided to use a different approach to her. After a while, Anna seemed to be more confident to express her opinion and more motivated to achieve goals in the workplace.
