Module 2
What is this chapter about?
The second module is strongly linked to the last part of the first module. It deals with generic
competences for tutors, especially listening and communication.
It addresses language and cultural barriers, especially in international companies.
Furthermore, this module aims at helping stimulate critical thinking in the working
environment and acquire problem solving skills. Critical thinking will improve your work as a
tutor by making it easier for you to see the relationships between the various facts, which will
result in a better understanding of the complex issues that can be involved in managing
trainees. It will also help you to make judgements and argumentation easier thanks to a better
understanding of the subject. This will allow you to explain more easily and be a better
instructor. The tutors must know how overcome all kinds of barriers in the working
environment. The relationship between the in-company tutor and the trainee takes place
within the company and can be a cultural challenge for both sides. In order for this to work
smoothly, pay attention to where your trainees come from and learn at least basic knowledge
of their culture, customs and social norms. Be particularly attentive to non-verbal
communication (gestures, facial expressions, tone, distance).
